Motive Television has achieved a successful demonstration of the technology that underlies and powers Tablet TV LLC, Motive’s groundbreaking joint venture with Granite Broadcasting, that will bring broadcast TV to tablets and other portable devices in the United States. The prototype, located in mid-town Manhattan, receives a crystal clear HD television channel via its original digital broadcast signal and sends the channel through local WiFi to an iPad. The result is a stunningly crisp HD picture, viewed full screen without the buffering, interruptions or reduced quality common for internet delivered video. The key to this superior viewing experience is that it is not internet-delivered video. This is a broadcast signal taken from the air with its full data content. Motive Television’s technology then transcodes the picture to the iPad, maintaining extremely high data quality so that the picture appears as bright, beautiful and detailed as the broadcast original. The viewer can choose to record the picture for playback at equally high quality.
In essence, this demonstration proves that even in a canyon of skyscrapers like Manhattan you can now watch over-the-air HD and SD television channels on a tablet without the need for cable, satellite, or internet. Best of all, Motive Television’s technology will work anywhere in the United States that there is a broadcast signal, picking up in-market over-the-air television channels wherever you are. Not demonstrated in the current prototype, but soon-to-come with the commercial rollout, is HD on demand programming, delivered using the same Motive Television technology currently utilized by major broadcasters in Europe.
