The US television market is a magnet of activity and innovation for one main reason: it represents the largest single group of consumers in the world who are ready, willing and able to pay a significant monthly fee for television. Over one hundred million homes subscribing to multichannel TV drive the companies that compete for a piece of that revenue stream to constantly improve their products and services in the battle to acquire and keep customers. Not all that innovation is American in origin. Often a company with a great idea, tested in another market, brings that value-creating intellectual property to the biggest opportunity on the planet.

Motive Television has developed highly efficient software and services for cable and satellite operators and digital terrestrial broadcasters, primarily from its home base in Europe. I am excited to take on the task of managing the growth of the company in the Americas. In the US there is huge potential to apply Motive Television’s expertise in working with terrestrial broadcasters to unlock more value from their broadcast spectrum. And for cable and satellite operators, Motive Television’s approach to using software to upgrade the vast installed base of set top boxes, to “turbocharge” those STB’s with TV Everywhere capabilities and other enhanced services, is compelling in its flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

The European model for building Pay-TV services delivered via digital terrestrial television is a clear reminder that the broadcast spectrum is capable of doing many things besides transmitting a linear channel. Although the US market has evolved without a broadcast Pay-TV element, the technology that allows for it can do wonders for US DTT players. In the coming weeks, Motive Television will be adapting its expertise in over-the-air television to develop solutions for broadcasters who are aggressively seeking new ways to utilize spectrum. Our market trial with KOFY in San Francisco is the first of these initiatives.

Cable and satellite operators in the US are determined to seize the initiative to roll out TV Everywhere. Motive Television is the leader in making this a cost-effective process through the innovation of the “home cloud”. With a reasonably capable STB as a starting point, Motive Television can be a cable or satellite operator’s technology partner to quickly implement TV Everywhere without a laborious device-by-device roll out process. With the competitive pressures mounting on MSO’s and DBS providers to head off the cord-cutting impulse at the pass, we are the right solution at the right time.

And this blog entry has run out of space before getting to the big opportunities in Latin America. We’ll save those for a future post…
